SAX Community Fridge is one of the latest community groups to receive funding from the Sizewell C Community Fund.

An innovative project that brings the community together by redistributing surplus food at regular community drop-in sessions in Saxmundham, SAX Community Fridge has received a £12,117 grant from the Sizewell C Community Fund.

Lead volunteer Martin Thorold, who helps to run the project alongside its founder Marion Hedley Lewis (pictured), said: “We are absolutely delighted to have received a grant from the Sizewell C Community Fund. Whilst our core goal is preventing food waste, what we’re most proud of is the community that’s grown around our twice-weekly sessions in Saxmundham. Each gathering welcomes between 50 and 100 visitors who come not just for food, but also to enjoy coffee, cake and conversation. Now in our fourth year, these sessions have helped reduce loneliness, support mental health and bring together people from across the area who might not otherwise meet.”

The Sizewell C Community Fund will provide up to £23m to local charities, community groups and organisations which are delivering projects that benefit communities located closest to, and most impacted by, Sizewell C development activity sites in East Suffolk.

We have launched our annual Surviving Winter campaign to support older people to stay warm and eat well as the weather turns colder.

Rather than gifting money to individuals to help with fuel costs, this year’s campaign will invite charities to apply for up to £5,000 in funding for practical projects which support older people (60+) throughout the winter.

Hannah Bloom, chief executive, said: “Over the past 15 years, we have raised a staggering £1.6m through our annual Surviving Winter campaign, which has supported thousands of vulnerable people as the weather turns colder.

“This year, we’re continuing to evolve our approach to meet the changing needs of our communities. While heating homes remains a priority, we know that staying warm, well and connected goes beyond fuel support. That’s why we’re inviting charities and community groups to apply for grants of up to £5,000 to deliver practical, impactful projects for older people."

The Sizewell C Community Fund has recently marked its first anniversary. Over the past year, the fund has awarded 36 grants totalling £2.6 million to support communities most impacted by the construction of Sizewell C.

Leiston, Youth & Community Angling Society (LYCAS) received £6,864 in September 2024. This grant is for the purchasing angling equipment, investing in security and the commissioning of an environmental survey of the pond following an increase in demand thanks to the swell in local population that comes with a Sizewell construction project.

The Sizewell C Community Fund will provide up to £23m to local charities, community groups and organisations which are delivering projects that benefit communities located closest to, and most impacted by, Sizewell C development activity sites in East Suffolk.

Recently, pupils from @ipswich_school visited @4youngpeople, one of the charities they have chosen to support this year. CEO, Becky Warnock provided valuable insight into the organisation’s work, supporting approximately 800 young people annually through their youth programmes and counselling services.

During the visit, students toured the charity’s new waterfront premises, made possible by funding from the Town Deal Regeneration Fund. Lucy also introduced them to the Foundation and explained how it helps to support voluntary organisations across the county. The pupils will share their experience with the rest of the school during an upcoming assembly and begin developing creative fundraising initiatives to support 4YP.
