By giving to Suffolk Community Foundation, you will ensure that small charities working throughout the county receive the much-needed funding they rely on, to enable them to continue their essential work for the most vulnerable in our communities.
Suffolk Community Foundation manages 136 grant making funds and, last year, awarded £3.8 million in funding (excluding the Sizewell C Community Fund). Grant size ranges from £500 to £40,000 or above, sometimes over multiple years. The average amount awarded was £4,546.
The challenge of financial instability across Suffolk’s voluntary sector has continued to increase in the last twelve months due to falling income and rising costs, with many organisations facing unprecedented challenges in demand to provide services.
The latest annual State of the Sector survey published jointly by Community Action Suffolk and Suffolk Community Foundation, describes a picture of the voluntary community, faith and social enterprise (VCFSE) sector under increasing pressure through diminishing income and other resources. Drawing on extensive research and 366 stakeholder insights gathered in late 2025 and early 2026, the report highlights ongoing challenges that include ever more complex demands, and continuing difficulty recruiting and retaining volunteers.
‘This time last year we reported that some organisations were facing crisis, and for many organisations, the situation has not improved. In some cases, the situation is worse resulting in use of reserves to keep the doors open.’ Says Hannah Reid, Chief Executive of Community Action Suffolk. ‘We would strongly urge any group facing these challenges to contact us so that we can offer support.’
The annual survey reports that Suffolk’s registered charity income has dropped by £33.4 million in the past year, and nine per cent of the organisations that took part in the study reported having no monetary reserves, leaving them vulnerable to closure. A further four per cent said they are unlikely to meet contractual obligations if their financial situation worsens. In addition, the average grant size has decreased by 64.7% in the last two years, with the actual number of grants awarded down from 808 to 297.
At the same time as income falling, 50 per cent of survey responders say they have experienced an increase in demand for services, with 61 per cent expecting further increases this year. Four per cent of organisations have been unable to meet demand, three per cent have met demand with great difficulty, and 40 per cent ‘with some difficulty’.
However, despite the challenging backdrop, the sector continues to show resilience, with 68 per cent remaining confident they can maintain or improve their service levels in the coming year.
The other major challenge Suffolk’s charities and voluntary groups face is a shortfall in volunteer numbers.
VCFSE groups rely heavily on volunteers. There are 43,514 individuals in Suffolk who support registered charities through volunteering, and many more that support unregistered community groups across the county, but it is not enough, and volunteer recruitment continues to rank among the sector’s top three challenges.
One area of volunteering of particular concern is the shortfall in trustees. There are 15,725 trustees in Suffolk registered with the charity commission, but despite this there is a widespread shortage of numbers.
Despite the picture painted by the latest survey findings there is room for optimism, says Hannah Bloom, Chief Executive of Suffolk Community Foundation.
‘Suffolk VCFSE organisations have always been resilient and innovative to meet adversity head on’, says Hannah. ‘Despite the challenges identified, charities and voluntary groups continue to deliver excellent services which help to keep people healthy, safe and engaged in learning, volunteering and work. As the operating environment continues to worsen, there is an opportunity for organisations to work more closely in partnership to support one another. We know there are many generous people and businesses in the county and we encourage those who are able to offer support to focus on local giving for Suffolk-based organisations which have the biggest impact in our communities.’
